1968 Coral 3S19 Electric Sitar
Rory lors de l'écriture de la chanson « Philby » qui traitait de la ''guerre froide'' souhaitait y ajouter une touche orientale mystérieuse. La solution résidait dans une sitar pour obtenir un effet balalaïka, mais Coral n'en avait fabriqué que 50 exemplaires et nous ne savions où en trouver que 5.
Il s'est avéré que j'étais aux États-Unis pour quelques jours et j'ai trouvé un prospectus pour une entreprise de vente de guitares du New Jersey. Ils proposaient une Coral à 1.500 $, ce qui était bien moins cher que d'en louer une pour toute une tournée.
Je suis revenu par avion avec Cliff Richard et son groupe. Au passage en douane, j'ai tenté de me faire passer pour l'un de ses guitaristes de studio, mais un douanier m'a arrêté. J'ai fait semblant d'être évasif et lui ai expliqué que c'était la guitare de mon frère, qu'elle était vieille et ne valait pas grand-chose, mais le douanier a sorti le même prospectus que j'avais vu à New York dans son catalogue et m'a dit que c'était 1.500 $ ! J'ai du payer la taxe à l'importation sur cette base. Ça m'a donner une bonne leçon.

“Rory had written the track ‘Philby’ about the Cold War and was keen to have some mysterious Eastern flavour on the track. The answer lay in having the sitar guitar to get a kind of balalaika effect, but Coral had only made 50 of these guitars and we only knew where 5 of them were.
Pete Townsend had one so we rented it from him for the sessions, which Rory loved. After the recordings we were due to go on tour and Rory was faced with the problem of duplicating the sound in a live setting. Of course Pete was happy to hire us the same one but it would have been very expensive considering how long Rorys tours were. As it turned out I was in the US for a few days and I picked up a flyer for a guitar trading company in New Jersey. The had a Coral on sale for $1500, which worked out much cheaper than hiring one for a whole tour.
I came back on a flight with Cliff Richard and his band and when it came to customs I tried to walk through as one his session guitar players, but a customs officer stopped me. I acted coy and explained that it was my brothers guitar and was old and not worth much but he pulled out the same flyer I had seen in New York from his catalogue book and said its $1500! That taught me a good lesson.”

1963 Supro Dual Tone

Rory joue ici sur une Supro de 1963. Cette Supro est un autre hommage aux guitaristes de blues américains qui ont captivé l'imagination de Rory. Selon le livre ''Palmtrees, Señoritas... and Rocket Ships!'', l'ouvrage de référence de Mark Makin sur les Nationals, les Supros et les marques de guitares associées, l'exemplaire de Rory semble être la deuxième itération de la Dual-Tone, apparue pour la première fois en 1954. C'est sur cette version mise à jour, qu'il a continué de jouer.

He plays on a 1963 Supro. This Supro is yet another homage to the American blues guitarists who first captured Rory’s imagination. According to the book ''Palmtrees, Señoritas... and Rocket Ships!'', Mark Makin’s comprehensive reference book on Nationals, Supros and related guitar brands, Rory’s example appears to be the second iteration of the Dual-Tone, which first appeared in 1954. This updated version, which went on.
This guitar was gifted to Rory by fellow guitarist Paul Fenton in 1985.
“Rory said, shook our hands warmly and we trotted up the stairs so the lad could see the ‘baited hook’, a 1962 (or 63?) Supro… Paul handed Rory one of the Supros. “Ah yes, indeed, it’s a beauty,” he said, handing it back. Paul wouldn’t take it. “No, I mean take it, it’s yours. It’s my way of paying you back. If it wasn’t for me seeing you in Toronto in ’72 I wouldn’t have gotten into music.” Oh no, wait, don’t do it in a flush, here, I’ll give you my number, I’ll be here ’til ten.” Aw, cut it out and take it,” I kidded him. “No, no really, I couldn’t, it’s too much.” After some persuasion Rory accepted, Paul gave Rory a brotherly hug and Rory looked at his gift, stupefied.”
